Winter weather can get the best of us. Severe cold and wind make it unpleasant to be outside, and snow and ice make it unsafe to navigate roads and sidewalks. It can even get bad enough to shut down highways and airports or cut off electricity to homes and offices. That’s why it’s essential to be prepared for extreme changes to your everyday routine.
Preparing your home or apartment can take a lot of planning. In addition to an adequate supply of water and nonperishable food, you’ll need to have ways to stay warm and light important areas of your home during the extended nighttime hours.
If you have an emergency generator, you’re one step ahead of the game. But if you’re like most of us, you’ll need to be ready to operate without electricity should the power to your house ever go out. More...

Whining in anticipation, your puppy Lucky is waiting by the door for you to put on your shoes and grab your things to go on your daily walk. Unfortunately, little do the both of you know that in addition to your wallet, keys, and phone, you should have grabbed your external cell phone battery charger to bring along.
Your morning routine has been the same for a while now—you get up early, before some people are even awake, and take a few laps around the local park with your dog as your only companion. Normally pretty mundane, it's likely that you always take the same path in the morning. This morning is different, however. Lucky spots the first bunny of her young life, and bolts. It's unexpected, and Lucky's Labrador strength wins out over the weak training leash you have her on, and you find yourself on the ground, with pain shooting up one of your legs.
What are you to do? Lucky isn't too much help licking your face, and it might be an hour or more before a stranger happens upon you who could help. Frustrated, you realize that you would have been able to call for help if you had grabbed your external cell phone battery charger before you left so that you could have charged your phone when you needed it most. You resolve to make sure to pack it every time you have an outdoor adventure in the future. After all, you realize, in similar situations, an external charger could give you access to: More...

You know what they look like. You probably have some in your house. Maybe your strings of Christmas lights this year were lit with them. Maybe you use battery-operated LED lights in your flashlight. But do you really know what LED lights are?
LEDs, or Light-Emitting Diodes, are the Bionic Man of lights. They use scant energy to create more brilliant light, and they have remarkable staying power. Just as with incandescent bulbs, there are LED lights that screw into a base to be powered through a cord, and then there are also battery-operated LED lights. If you’ve seen LEDs, you’ve probably noticed how much brighter and whiter they are compared to incandescent bulbs. That stark light is the product of a phosphorous coating and metal conductor. There’s no need for an incandescent filament, which is the hair-fine wire that heats up to the point of glowing.
To explain what we mean by remarkable staying power, consider this: To get 200 hours of light from your average flashlight, you can expect to burn through 12 incandescent bulbs powered by 234 AA batteries. But you’d need just one LED light and 6 AA batteries to do the same job. The energy cost difference? Try $175 for the incandescent bulb versus just $7 for the LED. Now, that’s remarkable.
Rayovac offers a bounty of battery-operated LED lights, from glow sticks to reading lights. Kids tend to dig our magnetized LED party lights, shaped like little eggs and able to flash an alternating rainbow of colors. Grown-ups tend to enjoy our LED Floating Lantern, which can blast its shine up to 226 meters away. Last but not least – and probably the most important thing to keep on hand in your house and vehicle – are our LED flashlights. We’ve got tons. Because of the remarkable staying power and longer life of battery-operated LED lights, an LED flashlight is just the kind of light you want to have in your emergency kit!
