On January 17th, 1906 J. B. Ramsay founded The French Battery Company in Madison, Wisconsin.
In 1914, The French Battery Company started selling flashlights under the trade name “French Flasher.” The term “flashlight” was used because the dry cells at that time were so weak that a steady beam of light depleted them too quickly, making it necessary to flash the light on and off for just a few seconds at a time to reduce the drain.
